Derek Calhoon, DVM, MSc
Dr. Calhoon is a small-animal veterinarian in the San Francisco Bay Area. He provides in-home euthanasia, hospice, and palliative care for pets through Harper's Promise, which he co-founded with his fiance, Ace. He also works on a part-time and relief basis for practices throughout the North and East Bay, as well as the Peninsula.
To pursue his passion of promoting the human-animal bond, Dr. Calhoon earned a Masters of Science in Sociology from the University of Amsterdam under a Fulbright grant in 2006 and attended Cornell University for veterinary school through 2010. He completed a rotating small-animal internship at East Bay Veterinary Specialists and Emergency in 2011.
Through compassionate high-quality care, effective communication, and accessible education regarding veterinary health and social well-being, he is dedicated to helping pets and owners deepen their ability to benefit one another. He and Ace live in downtown Oakland with three pets: the first cat Dr. Calhoon spayed, Moxie; Ace's favorite Chihuahua, Roland; and a young little dog they chased down together on the streets of Oakland, Sebastain (aka Bash). Dr. Calhoon spends his free time watching documentaries, consuming copious amounts of good music, and building his own furniture.
