6yo Black Lab, 13yo Golden Retriever, both female spayed
Euthanasia, both have cancer
Black lab has nasal tumor failing treatment. Golden has abdominal mass failing treatment. This is my first double euthanasia. The owners are a sweet mid-50's couple. They ask that both dogs be in the room at the same time. Extremely sweet dogs. The wife breaks down and starts to wail when I euthanize the Black Lab. Usually I let the owners have privacy at this moment, but she said through her wailing to proceed with the Golden. I felt like I weighed 500 pounds walking out of that room.

6yo female spayed Malti-Poo
THC intoxication
Started getting wobbly after chewing on a crumbly piece of food in a plastic baggie on a walk. Looked to owner like seizures, but actually classic THC signs: uncoordinated gate, easily startled, falls asleep if unstimulated for a few seconds. Wasn't dribbling urine, but that's another one. Tested positive on urine dipstick. Owner a pleasant, round-faced little high school teacher. "Those fucking teenagers...I'm gonna laugh about this when I know my dog is ok." Tells her son to get the baggie and he says he's at church, "You feel me?" "No, I do not FEEL you. Don't talk to me that way, I'm your mother. I'm not into all your slang."

3-month-old male intact Siberian Huskie
Internal bleeding, rat poison, euthanized
Given to the late teen/early-twenties owner for her birthday. Presented screaming but unresponsive, white as a sheet. Found large amount of blood in abdomen on ultrasound. He had access to D-Con rat bait (bright green blocks). This stuff prevents coagulation, so pets bleed internally. Treatable in the early stages, usually doesn't cause a problem until coagulation factors depleted over 3 days. This patient likely would not have survived and his owner had no money to try. Buried at home, had to advise to bury deeply or cover with heavy object, as wildlife, other pets, even plants can access active euthanasia solution for months.

3-month-old female spayed domestic shorthair cat
Acute Kidney Failure following spay
Started vomiting a few days after routine spay. Labwork showed severe kidney value elevation. Kidneys are the most sensitive organ to low blood pressure, which is a risk of all anesthesias. Keeping the kitten overnight to provide lots and lots of fluids. Fingers crossed her kidneys are not permanently damaged.

3yo male intact rat
Recurrent mites
Treated with ivermectin (3 doses, 2 weeks apart) for similar signs 2 months ago. Greasy, thin coat with scabbing and itchiness. Could be fleas, hormonal, other. Ulcers on back of hocks. Husband (40's) brought the pet in per wife's instructions. She's overwhelmed because she is only one caring for pet along with a lot else in the house. Husband said, "When I was single, I had all kinds of pets. Now the house is full and...and..." He rubs his eyes, "I just work. I don't pay much attention to what goes on." Repeated ivermectin, recommend treat cats in the house too.

18yo male neutered domestic shorthair cat
10 days amorphous signs, declining
Bloody vomiting and diarrhea, kidney failure, liver mass, possibly thickened GI tract. No definitive diagnosis. Possibilities include cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, GI ulcer, others. I advise owner that chances of improving things are almost zero. He elects 12-24 hours of inpatient last ditch effort care. I expect to euthanize tomorrow.  UPDATE: Cat did shockingly well. Still very ill, but started eating and went home.
